Wiscasset Mods Proving Popular
It’s been a little over a month since Wiscasset Raceway promoter Tom Mayberry announced the new Wiscasset Modified division that will debut this spring at the coastal oval, and the response to the new class has been encouraging. Twenty teams have already requested numbers as we head into the New Year and a number of cars are already nearing completion.
Perennial LMS front-runner Dana Grover has a new mod in the works as does Harold Hinkley, a multi time Wiscasset Pro Stock championship car owner. Gabe Kordics has a number reserved, as does Dana Darveau, Bobby Taylor and Steve Reno. Fred DiPompo, Bernie Dinsmore and Bill Pinkham will be running Maine’s only weekly open wheel asphalt division and Jason Taylor, Rodney Brooks and Dave Berry all plan to be in the field for opening day. 2002 Pro All Stars Series Champion Ben Rowe has reserved his familiar 00 and plans to be at Wiscasset on his free Fridays. ”It looks like a fun, fast and inexpensive class to me”, says Rowe, “I’m going to get a car together and have some fun on Friday nights!”
Mayberry is pleased with the response to the new class.” I think the Wiscasset mods are going to put on a great show every Friday night. I’m certainly pleased with the response we’ve had for the class, and to show our appreciation I’ve decided to raise the winner’s share of the purse to $400.00 on a weekly basis. We’ve done our best to keep the cost to compete at a reasonable level with a one tire per week rule, 1.94 valve heads, and inexpensive chassis and engine components. I want to remind everyone that’s building a car or contemplating one that this is an entry level class and our tech team will be scrutinizing these cars carefully to insure that they meet the spirit as well as the letter of the rules. I’ve reserved the right to institute a claimer rule to make sure costs don’t get out of hand under the hood, and I won’t be afraid to put one in effect if it looks like that’s happening. I’m looking forward to seeing all these cars hit the track; I race fans will see some dynamite racing by the Wiscasset mods this season!”
The Wiscasset Mods will make their debut on Saturday April 12th at 2 PM, The Strong Chevrolet Opening Day at the West Alna road speed plant.
